This is a revised and updated reprint of a title by the same author, published in 1999 by Hikoki. A quick internet search revealed that copy to have only 99 pages, as compared to the 192 in this edition, so this is quite an update!

The production quality on this book is first rate. Thick, matte-finished pages are enclosed in even stiffer color covers.

The first 15 or so pages describe the background and possible rationale for the proliferation of unit emblems in the Luftwaffe. After this, the next 175+ pages are devoted to lists of each and every unit that used some form of an emblem on its aircraft. Sections are broken down by aircraft type, such as fighter units, bomber units, etc.

Units within each section are listed in numerical order (JG 1, JG2, etc), and a brief paragraph is devoted to a description of that particular unit's emblem. Immediately to one side or the other of the paragraph is a color profile of the emblem described. The author clearly marks any insignia that are based on conjecture or approximate interpretation of a black and white photo. Most are not marked this way, showing the incredible amount of research that has been conducted. A nice touch is a list at the end of each paragraph of aircraft types using a particular emblem. Photos are interspersed throughout, some in color.

This is definitely a niche interest, but any Luftwaffe modeler is bound to find some useful bits of information in here. I consider myself fairly educated in this topic, but I found quite a few new and interesting-looking emblems within these pages. And the photo evidence to back them up. This is a great resource for ensuring the little extra markings detail on your next Luftwaffe project is accurate. Highly recommend.

Thanks to Specialty Press for the review copy, and to IPMS/USA for allowing me to review it.
