The MSRP for the tape products are: 5mm $6.50 and 12mm $11.50
Masking is a job that makes most modelers cringe but it is a task that at some point in your modeling career you will use. There are several different types of tapes out there that seem to do the task to a certain level but we can find complaints in all of them. I was given the opportunity to review 2 different sizes of Tamiya’s tape offering’s to allow you to mask curves on your model of choice. The tape is made out of a soft resin material, allowing the tape to adhere in a curved line while preventing paint from seeping into masked off areas.
I’m sure we are all familiar with Tamiya masking tape in the yellow variety but this tape offers more than just casual masking but allows you to make curves of any shape or pattern that you would like, this will work great for canopy masking and complex camouflage patterns, I was also able to do compound curves with this product. As you begin to apply the tape I found it useful to begin to hold my thumb close to where I wanted to start making my curves, as you begin to make your curve pull the tape with a little pressure and then move your thumb along the part that is being laid down. You will notice when you are finished there may be a slight bubble here and there but this is easily laid down by running your finger back over the tape to smooth it out. Although I only have the 5mm and the 12mm to review this tape also comes in a 2mm and 3mm size, with the smaller width of the tape the tighter the curves you can achieve.
All in all I am well pleased with the curving tapes from Tamiya and I can think of endless possibilities where this will make the end result better than what it has been in the past. There are several tapes in the market that you can use for this purpose with the most familiar being 3M but the price and the size of the roll (20M) from Tamiya being a lot more manageable than the other offerings.
Another great finishing product offering from Tamiya. Purchase some of this tape and you will not be disappointed. I would like to thank Tamiya and IPMS USA for the opportunity to review this item.
