The Hawker Typhoon

The Hawker Typhoon was designed as a replacement for the Hawker Hurricane, and was intended to be a medium to high altitude interceptor, However, several design problems did not permit the Typhoon to meet this requirement. Initially the Typhoon Mk Ia was fitted with twelve .303 calibre machine guns, while the later version, the Mk. Ib, was fitted with four 20 mm Hispano Mk. II cannons.

Decal Sheet Contents

The subject of this review is a decal sheet that is 2 3/4" wide by 4" long, and includes national markings for one aircraft. Two sets of top wing insignia are included, along with the fuselage side and underwing markings, as well as the fin flash.

Included with the decals is an 8 1/2" by 11" sheet, printed on both sides with a 12 step narative for preparation and application of the decals. A color version of this material was subsequently furnished upon registration. This is pretty much basic information that we should all know by heart, but it offers a good review on how to apply decals. Also included on this sheet are plans and profile of Typhoons providing very specific information on the decal placement. Here's is where we learn why the two sets of top wing markings are provided. The sizes and locations for these markingds varied depending on the aircarft. Check for specific aircraft references.

The final part of the package is a business card-size paper that offers information and registration and one of the better parts of the purchase: a full-color PDF version of the placement instructions and reference material. This amounts to 10 pages that are worthy of saving for future reference.

Complementing this sheet is a sheet of airframe stencils for $3.25 (set AOD48S03) plus shipping, or buy the combo set for $8.45 Canadian plus shipping.

Reference Materials

The 10-page placement instructions and reference material are really the icing on the cupcake. This material will definately be retained for future projects.

The Kit Decals and Instructions

The kit decals offer marking for a single aircraft, with only one size for the top wing national insignia. I have alway needed to carefully study the placement information on the kit instructions, and seldom saw any form of reference for the markings locations. They look reasonably accurate, but if you want real accuracy the Skygrid decal and placement information will satisfy that requirement.

Conclusion

Time to build the Hasegawa Typhon and use these decals. The decals and the 10 page placement instructions and reference make this set a good deal. I recommend this set, and the separately purchased stencil set, or the combination set for anyone wishing to build and accurately mark a Typhoon.

These decals are also available for the larger and smaller scales also. Scales larger than 1/48th will certainly require greater accuracy in placement.

Response from the folks at Aviaeology by Skygrid was prompt. I had my PDF version of the placement instructions and reference material within a day of my registration. Had I not submitted my request so late in the day I believe I would have had a response that same day. Great folks there!!

My thanks to Aviaeology by Skygrid and IPMS/USA for the opportunity to review this fine set of decals. Hopefully in the next few months I can submit a follow-up review with a completed model with these decals in place.
