It's nice when a product delivers what it promises as this book does. As the title implies this is a buyer's roadmap to purchasing a fifth generation (2005 to 2014) Ford Mustang also known as the S-197 bodied cars. Mustang fans were thrilled when this body style was reveled in 2004 because it harkened back to the sharp angular lines of 1965-67 Mustangs that established the "Ponycar" paradigm. The 2011 model year was especially anticipated as it marked the return of the 5.0 liter V8. As the proud owner of a 2013 Mustang GT as well as a lifelong fan of this iconic car, I was intrigued by what this book offers.

The book opens with a brief introduction to the Mustang brand and the S-197 styled cars in particular. It then launches into a discussion about the factors to consider before purchase including cost, maintenance, practicality and where to source an S 197 Mustang. Perhaps the most valuable section of the book is the 20 pages filled with specific inspection points and photos to review on your potential purchase. This is a step by step check list of areas to inspect. Closing out this title are chapters on documentation, organizations and parts suppliers devoted to the brand and specifications for the various models years the S 197 bodies were manufactured. Veloce publishing is based in England and the author, Matt Cooks writing style reflects that.

In terms of its value as a guide for modelers, the book does have a lot of photos showing the variations in accessories and trim for the 2005-2014 Mustangs. That could be of value if your kit bashing to produce a specific model year. If you don't have access to the real cars, this book will fill a gap in your reference library. Aftermarket Mustang models such as Roush, or Saleen are not addressed but there are a few Shelby's in there. If you like modeling S 197 Mustangs or if you're in the market for a fifth generation car, this should probably be on your shelf. Thank you to Veloce publishing for the sample and to IPMS for indulging this Mustang fan.
